Where the numbers come from

Gold is the spot price (XAU/USD). The yen price per gram divides by 31.1034768 grams to the troy ounce and converts at that day's USD/JPY rate. It is not a retail counter price. Buying physical gold adds the dealer's bar charge and consumption tax on top; selling gets you the buy-back price, which is lower than retail.

Exchange rates are the reference rates published by the European Central Bank. They update on weekdays only, so at weekends and on holidays the latest value is the previous business day's. The rate you actually get when exchanging or remitting money includes a margin on top.

Petrol and diesel are national average cash prices at the pump, including consumption tax, from the petroleum product price survey by Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. The survey is normally taken on Monday and published on Wednesday, so these figures change only once a week. Regional variation is large, and plenty of areas sit well above or below the national average.

The fuel figures above are national averages. Prices vary a lot between prefectures, and the per-prefecture breakdown — petrol, diesel and kerosene for all 47 prefectures, updated weekly — is on ガソリン価格 都道府県ランキング (Japanese only; the tables are readable without Japanese). Wholesale rice prices by growing region are on 米の価格 銘柄別一覧 (Japanese only). If you are working out Japanese income thresholds, see Japan income thresholds.

How to read the charts

Each chart covers the last 90 days. The vertical axis scales to the range of the values, so movement is visible even in a quiet period. “Change” is the difference from the previous reading — the previous business day for exchange rates, the previous week for fuel.

These are automatically collected reference figures. For buying or selling, check the actual prices at your bank or dealer. Nothing here is investment advice. On days when collection fails, a point may be missing from the series.

Frequently asked questions

How often is the gold price updated?

Once a day, at around 03:00 Japan time. The figure shown is the spot price (XAU/USD) divided by 31.1034768 to give a gram price, then converted to yen at that day's USD/JPY rate. It is not a retail counter price and excludes dealer fees and consumption tax.

As of when are the fuel prices?

They are national average cash prices at the pump, including consumption tax, from the petroleum product price survey by Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. The survey is normally taken on Monday and published on Wednesday, so the fuel figures on this page change only once a week.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

They are the reference rates published by the European Central Bank. They update on weekdays only, so at weekends and on holidays the latest value is the previous business day's. The rate you actually get when exchanging or remitting money includes a margin on top.
